Does baking soda and vinegar actually work for cleaning?

Yes — but usually they are more useful separately than together. Understanding what each ingredient does helps you choose the right one instead of relying on the fizz.

Quick answerBaking soda is mildly alkaline and mildly abrasive. Vinegar is acidic and can help dissolve some mineral deposits. When mixed together they react, fizz, and largely neutralize one another. The bubbling can provide some mechanical movement, but the mixture is not automatically a stronger cleaner.

What baking soda is good at

Baking soda can be useful when you need a gentle abrasive action or an alkaline material that can help loosen some greasy or acidic soils. A damp paste can be useful on many durable surfaces, but you should still test an inconspicuous area before scrubbing a finish that can scratch.

What vinegar is good at

White vinegar contains acetic acid. That acidity can help with some mineral deposits and alkaline residue, which is why vinegar often works well on certain hard-water deposits.

Important surface warning: vinegar is an acid. Do not use it casually on marble, limestone, travertine, or other acid-sensitive natural stone. The Natural Stone Institute warns that acids such as vinegar can dull or etch calcareous stone and may affect some sealers.

So what is happening when they fizz?

When an acid such as vinegar meets sodium bicarbonate, they react and release carbon dioxide gas. That is the familiar bubbling. Once the reaction runs its course, much of the useful acidity and alkalinity has been consumed.

The fizz can sometimes help physically loosen debris in a confined space, but it should not be treated as proof that the mixture is chemically more powerful than the ingredients used appropriately on their own.

A better way to use them

  1. Identify the mess and the surface first. Mineral scale, grease, food residue and soap buildup are different problems.
  2. Choose one ingredient for the job. Use baking soda where gentle abrasion or alkalinity is useful; use diluted vinegar only on acid-safe surfaces where mineral buildup is the problem.
  3. Give the product time. Soaking and dwell time often do more than aggressive scrubbing.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Leaving cleaning residue behind can create new problems.

Where we would skip both

Delicate finishes, manufacturer-coated surfaces, electronics, natural stone, unknown specialty materials and anything with a specific care label should be cleaned according to the manufacturer or material supplier first.

Never use this idea as a reason to experiment with bleach. The CDC advises never mixing household bleach or disinfectants with other cleaners or disinfectants because dangerous vapors can be released.
